It is an honor to introduce myself to you as the Program Manager of the Parent Resource Center and to continue my amazing journey at Tulsa Public Schools. My name is LaTina Busby, I am eager to contribute to the body of work at the Parent Resource Center, to collaborate alongside the community and amazing partner organizations to assist parents with advocacy to ensure their children’s academic success.
The 2023-2024 school year marks my 20 th year in education. As a proud Tulsan and a veteran of Tulsa Public Schools, I have worked with families for two decades. I have served at Booker T. Washington High School, Academy Central Elementary, and McLain High School, and have led work with district parent involvement facilitators for more than eight years as the Parent Advocacy Coordinator.
I hold a master's degree in urban education and a bachelor of science degree in business management from Langston University. I have extensive experience in supporting families with important wrap-around services that allows them to fully advocate for their children.
I bring valuable leadership experience in the area of community and family engagement. In previous positions, I have served as the graduation coach at Tulsa Public Schools. My responsibilities were to aide in the assistance of identifying middle and high school students, individually and in groups, with the purpose of keeping them on pace for graduation. In addition, I served as the office manager at the YMCA and Fine Host Corporation managing the day-to-day operation.
In addition to my role as an educator, I value the importance of family and family values. Some of my public service includes Catholic Charities, Lefty’s Outreach, and Black Flowers Society. I am also a proud former Hall of Honor honoree by 100 Black Men of Tulsa organization which is committed to the successful future of families and youth.
Our focus at the Parent Resource Center is committed to connecting parents with the information and resources that facilitate and strengthen collaborative partnerships between home, school, and the community. As we work toward the common goal of success and empowerment, let us always keep our students and parents the primary focus of our work. I look forward to serving you and celebrating our collective successes.
In the fall of 2018, Tulsa Public Schools began a historic effort to improve teaching and learning experiences for students and families through radical collaboration with the communities we serve. Former superintendent Deborah Gist, Board member Jennettie Marshall, and the Tulsa Board of Education formed the North Tulsa Community Education Task Force led by the Reverend M.C. Potter and Reverend Andrea Chambers to take on the urgent work of reviewing the design of the McLain feeder pattern and developing recommendations to improve the experiences of students in those schools.
Over the fall semester, the members of the North Tulsa Community Education Task Force worked intensively to engage with each other and with community members to develop a set of recommendations for how to best serve students in North Tulsa in the 2019-2020 school year and beyond. In January 2019, the Task Force presented a set of recommendations for how to best serve students in McLain feeder pattern schools, which included the expansion of Monroe Demonstration Academy to serve all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the feeder pattern.
Through this extensive collaboration, we have an opportunity to begin to create stronger academic and extra-curricular programming for our students while reducing the number of transitions that they have throughout their time in school. The most powerful thing that can happen in a school is when people rally behind it and believe that its students and teachers can achieve the extraordinary. With a unified middle school experience in the McLain feeder pattern, all students will have access to specialized programs that create exceptional learning experiences.
The expanded Monroe Demonstration Academy – along with more than 100 community volunteers – welcomed 827 students to the new school year in August 2019. 45 volunteers made 714 calls to Monroe parents and families during a week of phone banking. 50 volunteers engaged 193 parents and families during Monroe community canvassing days
The new McLain feeder pattern designed by the work of the North Tulsa Community Education Task Force, now filters seven elementary schools into Monroe Demonstration Academy then onto McLain High School. Those schools include Anderson Elementary, Celia Clinton Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, John Hope Franklin Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Unity Learning Academy, and Walt Whitman Elementary schools.
